Why sponsor the BSSG?
Community-based Support for Stroke in Boroondara
Community-based groups like the Boroondara Stroke Support Group (or the BSSG) does its best to provide on-going support for stroke survivors and their carers in the City of Boroondara, but its effectiveness is greatly restricted by the lack of funding and the fact that stroke survivors and their carers do not know about the services provided by the BSSG. The BSSG has been operating since October 2002, and is the only stroke support group operating in the City of Boroondara apart from day therapy centres run be local rehabilitation hospitals. The BSSG has about 100 members, of whom about 40 are stroke survivors, and about 65% of these are over 60 years of age. But this is less than 3% of the estimated number of stroke survivors in Boroondara. So the potential for increased membership and community involvement by the BSSG is very significant.
While community-based aged care groups have access to government funds to support their on-going operation, disability support groups like the BSSG can only apply for funds to carry out specific projects. The BSSG is a 'not-for-profit' organisation and neither the Stroke Association of Victoria nor the National Stroke Foundation have funds to support the on-going operation of community-based stroke support groups. As a consequence the BSSG needs to devote considerable time and effort applying for grants to fund its operations, programs and special projects. This detracts from its ability to provide 'grass roots' support for its members. In order to help fund our on-going operations and to keep supporting stroke survivors and their carers, the BSSG is seeking sponsorship from organisations operating in the City of Boroondara.
