Stroke in Boroondara
Did you know that ...
- Stroke is the third largest cause of death and one of the leading causes of disability amongst adults in Australia?
- More women die from strokes than breast cancer?
- About 375 Boroondara residents, (or just over 1 every day), suffer a stroke each year?
- About 125 additional stroke survivors require on-going support in Boroondara each year?
- Over 1,700 stroke survivors currently live in the City of Boroondara?
- The cost burden associated with stroke in the City of Boroondara is estimated to be about $15.4 million a year.
These numbers don’t include the carers and family members whose social and economic lives are disrupted by the need to provide on-going support for their loved ones. While the acute care and sub-acute care available to stroke survivors is generally very good, there is a very fragmented and poorly funded approach to community-based care for stroke survivors. There is no coordinated strategy to ensure that stroke survivors, their carers and family members are guided through the difficult times that follow the discharge of stroke survivors back into the community.
Note 1. These figures are based on Australian Census data for 2001 and National Stroke Foundation statistics that indicate that there are about 220,000 stroke survivors currently living in Australia, that about 48,000 strokes occur in Australia each year, and about 33% of stroke survivors have long-term disabilities that require on-going care. Dr. Cadilhac of the National Stroke Research Institute has estimated that in 2004 the cost burden of stroke in Australia is about AU$2 billion.
